Yazoo vocalist Alison Moyet is making yet another comeback with upcoming album, The Minutes, due to be released May 6th. Albeit, it may be a minor return after three years since her last release, in comparison to her eight year absence, which ended in 2002. Having celebrated her 25th anniversary in the business in 2009, the singing siren sounds as strong as in her heyday.
Famed during the '80s and early '90s for her stand-out
contralto vocals, Moyet became well known for hits including, Only You and
Don't Go with Yazoo partner Vince Clarke as well as Love Resurrection and her
cover of That Ole Devil Called Love. After this impressive career record and at
the age of 51, Moyet released single, When I Was Your Girl on April 1st, which
features on her forthcoming album.
The track is a bold contrast to the artist's 2007 album, The
Turn. Easing in with a gentle piano intro, her vocals are striking and sharp
and accompany the driving percussion perfectly. It is a very adventurous single
with a bold chorus and heavily produced instrumentation. Moyet has succeeded in
creating a current sounding track without obviously overstepping the mark.
When I Was Your Girl also features an intriguing video,
starring Moyet's own daughter. Walking along a pier, the singer eventually
stands in the shadow of her daughter, occasionally gazing towards her. This
adds a touch of sentimentality to the track and suggests that Moyet is
reflecting on past times throughout the song.
The Essex born singer has described the album as "dark and definitely not aimed at the charts... it
has an electronic bias, but isn’t retro" and this is evident in the
single. It feels mature yet modern and becomes increasingly catchy with each
listen, which is a sure winner for the singing virtuoso.
